I feel I have covered the "basics" of commercial rabbit raising, which was my purpose for this blog. I mean how much more can be said, without getting too technical, which I am not. We continue to enjoy our rabbits, and harvest an average of 70-80 rabbits every 2 weeks. We hope to continue this number through the summer.

There are also plenty of short videos on you-tube having to do with the subject of raising rabbits. So therefore I will just say I hope that what I have written has been a help to any of you interested in considering a rabbitry, whether commercial or just for your own use. This blog wll remain open, but I will not be posting. If anyone has questions, please feel free to e-mail me and I will be glad to attemp an answer.

Wishing you all the best ......
Sunny

Rabbit-pen wire

Some have asked for sizes of our rabbit pens, how to build and what size wire we used. Where these make a seam you attach a length of 18" x 1"x 2" with babysaver wire (4' deep) at the bottom to form a common back (cut in whatever length you are working with; we did 14' sections to make a double 7 hole run.) The sides, made from 1"x2"x 18" with babysaver wire at the one edge, are cut 30" front to back. The front wire is one piece, from 1"x2"x 24" bent at an angle with 14" being on the slant and 10" the very front.

Slant front has a hole cut out of 10"x16". The top is 36" wide and covers both back to back cages ; each cage top being 18" front to back. Our cages are hung from the ceiling with fencing wire (can't remember the gage)

Now..... Apparently it had come through the wire on the front of the cage and fallen out. We have baby-saver wire on the sides and back but not the front. Sometimes the babies will be hanging onto the does breast when she jumps out of the nesting box and they end up on the wire.

I brought it in and ran warm water over it until I had lots of movement, being careful not to get water near its mouth or nose, then wrapped it in a washcloth and put in a basket on the warming shelf of the wood cook-stove. With our 20-30* below normal temps for this time of year I am checking the babies often. We have had 36 new litters so far this fall and 5 more to go in the next couple days.

Unfortunately, we have lost several litters of 1st time moms. Some don't have a clue as to what is going on, and have them on the wire even though a nest box is provided. Some don't pull hair or wool to line the nest box with. Usually this is remedied by the time their next litters are born. And then there are some, who even though it is their first time I am able to foster some extra ones to and they take very good care of all. The next several are due the 29th.

Fall Start-Up

First kits of the fall season... 3 wks old

They get playful, and want to investigate what on the other side of their 4 wall

My heart just isn't into blogging right now as I am dealing with some physical issues, but just wanted to post a couple pics

No Free Lunch .....

It is time for the does to start back to work ....... yes sirree! We welcome any and all comments. This morning was almost 90* outside and a cool 81* inside the barn. Fans are going to keep air moving and humidity down. Bunnies are spaced to 4-5 to a pen where possible, instead of the 8 per pen in cooler weather. Another 6 weeks and we will be through the worst of it. This one got me good and I had to run to the house to get it, and other bad scratches, bandaged before I could go back out and finish. It just would not stop bleeding. Thankfully, we both had had life-time tetanus shots.

I "most" always wear at least long sleeves ( can't stand gloves) when loading fryers to go to market. This day was hot (95*) and muggy and I was only moving a few jr. does into new cages to space them out. Should have known better. Common sense should have told me they , like humans, don't like messed with either, when it is so hot, and I should have had them seperated a week ago, before the heat hit so hard. But, there I was, at the hottest part of the day.... you get the picture.

So.... new rules for this rabbitry ....

1. I don't care how hot it is, always wear long sleeves when moving rabbits.

2. They need this time to gain condition, as when the heat rises they don't eat as much as in cooler weather.

Besides this. we are taking the nessessary steps to try to keep them unstressed from the heat.

We have cleaned all the fans and made sure they are in good running condition. That meant taking off the grill covers , air hosing all the accumulated hair, scrubbing them. air hosing the motor parts and washing the blades and entire casing., and putting them back together. There are 4 fans (24" square box) hung from the ceiling, all blowing the same direction to cause air flow through out the barn. We also use a 42" barn fan on the floor to move damp air out of the barn. The goals are, keep a lesser number of fryers per cage, keep the air moving , but not blowing on the rabbits, check nest boxes often for expired bunnies and for dampness, feed often but not let feed sit in feeders more than 12 hrs, make sure all water nipples stay in good working order, and allowing more time between breedings.

Tools of the Trade

While working in the barn the other day, I thought about the different tools we have tried and what worked and what didn't. This wire-brush barbeque grill scraper ( available at wal-mart) works wonders for cleaning the floors of the cages while torching them. Gets rid of all the residue from torched hair build-up. Gets into the corners really nice and has a long enough handle to get to the back of the cage easily. We have tried regular shop-type wire brushes, but the nose of it is too long to permit getting the bristles into the corners, and it really isn't long enough to reach the back under the cage.

Bags of pine shavings work well for nest-box material. Just push it along the isles and stop at every feeder to distribute their needed ration. For our number of rabbits, it lasts about half-way around the barn, then needs filled again to finish the job. When there is a high number of fryers being fed , we go thru about 120-135#'s /day, and average about 2 ton /month.

Index cards, pens, and black fine point permanent marker for doe cards, to keep record of when doe was bred, to which buck, when she kindled and how many. Also snack size ziplock baggies are great for putting doe cards into to keep clean and nice. Then the cards are attached to the back of the feeder with a clothespin for extra security. The container of wipes is handy for quick needed "hand wash". The coffee can holds extra hair pulled by does that didn't need that much in their nestbox. During winter it will come in handy for those does that don't pull any, or don't pull enough.

I f you have other tools that work for you or other nifty ideas for your rabbitry, please let us know. She was taking good care of the live ones so I gave her 3 more of the JMJ-1 babies and so far they are all doing fine. I think JMJ-1 can handle nursing 9 babies :) I used to put a dab of vinegar on the foster mom's nose and on all the babies so everyone would smell the same, but for the last several months I have just put new babies in the middle of the nest or each one between 2 original babies.

What is the highest number live in the litters you have had? Six of them had litters of 9 - 13, which is our norm. As the does get older (3-4 yrs) they produce smaller litters; such as Miss Bunnie who had 6. We still use them because they can be good foster moms for does that just have too many to nurse. So Miss Bunnie adopted 2 from the doe that had 13, which left me with 3 litters who had 11 to raise. Another doe had 9 and the others had 10 each. This picture is of a brand new litter of 11 kits.

This litter, 2 1/2 wks old, is taking an afternoon nap. If you don't mind it not being the commercial mulch color, it works just as well...... and saves money in the long run.

The next step.....

We have started to cut the openings in the top quarter of the side-walls in the rabbit barn. We need to keep records of which does are due to kindle (give birth), when the bunnies were born, which does need re-bred and to which buck, which bunnies need weaned and when. We also need to keep a close eye on the first-time moms, such as this one; who, although she had a nest-box in at the right time, she opted not to use it, but had her babies on the wire floor during a cold spell in December. Fortunately, I was out early that morning checking on them and found the babies chilled with little movement. Babies can chill and die within a hour or so at 25*.

I brought them into the house, and using the hair-dryer on low setting, began to warm them till they started moving and feeling around for something to eat. I put them on a towel on the table, and a small lamp over them with a dish-towel tented over. A couple hours later when they were no longer chilled, I took them back out and put some saved hair into the nest box and the babies into it, and covered them with more rabbit hair. I then put a heat lamp on top of the cage. Now it was up to mom rabbit as to whether she would take care of them or not. She did, and we saved 8 out of 10 of that litter.

Other chores...

Hubby takes a moment to "talk to the animals" after a hard day's work.

He makes sure we have enough nestboxes on hand for all the expansion does, building 34 in one weekend. It holds 3 ton of feed. Hubby climbs the ladder and checks to see how much we have used so that we order it in time and don't run out. There is a sliding trap door at the bottom where we push the feed cart under and fill it. (for Sammi)

What do you do with that many rabbits??!! What do you do with them in the winter time? Do they bite? What do they eat? Do you ever let them run loose on the ground? I have been asked these and similar questions several times, especially in the last few months. I will try to answer from our perspective.

Rabbits are a very good high-quality meat, high in protein and low in fat. (Did you know you can buy rabbit meat in many Wal-Mart stores??) The meat can be subsituted for chicken in most any recipe. They also produce the absolute best garden fertilizer, and it can be applied directly to the garden and flowerbeds without burning the plants. Their feed-to-meat conversion ratio is higher than chickens, meaning you get more meat per lb. of feed that it takes to grow them to processing weight. They are very easy to care for, utilizing the right housing conditions, whether raising a few rabbits or hundreds.

After moving to Kentucky, we found we had landed in an area where there are several people raising rabbits to supply a research and rabbit meat processing company. ( at the time, I had just wanted a few rabbits for meat for us and fertilizer for the garden) After visiting a local rabbitry and talking with the owners several times about the potential for a semi-large operation, we decided to purchase breeding stock, namely New Zealand White rabbits. What we learned, and what inspired us to go into production on a commercial level, is that rabbits are, and have been for many years, used for research. Research to help develope new medicines and vaccines, used to prevent and /or treat diseases. That really inspired me: a home business and a contribution that benefits society.

As far as do they bite? Only if they feel threatened. When reaching into the cage I always watch the eyes and ears of the animal, and much like a horse or other animals they will lay their ears back in warning. Sometimes they will growl, especially if the doe has just kindled (given birth)
Do I let them loose on the ground? For sake of disease prevention, even though I have my favorites, I would not put them on the ground, as one may well do if they have a pet rabbit.
What do they eat? They are fed an 18% pelleted rabbit feed. Once in a while I will give a carrot piece or an apple piece as a treat. And what do we do with them in the winter? Feed them and care for them, make sure there is fresh air but no drafts on them. This is it, in a very tiny nut-shell. I have always enjoyed working with animals and this is just the next step for me in a long line of animal ventures. I hope to enjoy it for a long time.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://therabbitmathematician.blogspot.com/2009/02/why-raise-rabbits-for-sammi.html' title='Why Raise Rabbits? Now we have 3 double rows of new cages completed and hooked up to the automatic water supply, the 3rd row having just been completed today.

We have moved all the rabbits to the new pens; one-hundred-fourteen 24" x 30" new cages in all. We still have a third of the barn to go. My husband has worked very hard to get this much completed in such a short amount of time.

I am very proud of the water system hubby designed and installed. On the lower left where the water comes in from a hydrant below, there is a 2 1/2 gal. water heater, which serves to keep the circulating water just above the freezing point. Water travels from that to a circulating pump and in turn to a medication unit if needed.

The water either by-passes the medicator or not, depending on which line it is directed through. In the picture we were experimenting with adding apple-cider vinegar to the water, which is healthful to most animals as well as humans. I give it to the chickens and used to put it in the dairy goats' water when we had them.

It is so good to have the water on an automatic system. It is always fresh and there will be little bacteria build-up, which will be alleviated by flushing the lines periodically. That precious commodity called time can be used for observing the rabbits more closely and doing other needed upkeep. As far as insulating the barn we have had as low as 9* this winter and the water bottles did not freeze. We are hoping the insulation also does its job in helping to keep the barn a bit cooler in the heat of the summer. I hope to hear from others who have added insulation to their rabbit facility.

Rabbit-barn Remodeling and Expansion Project

Work on the rabbit barn remodeling and expansion project has been at a steady pace for the last few weeks. We were blessed with several hours of help from a few friends with the heavy stuff such as reinforcing ceiling rafters.
